It was all Mike Unger in the first tournament on the 2014 OCAGA Tour. Back in October he was able to do no better than 103. But the spring opener at the Sand Barrens was a different story. He dropped par putts on the first and third holes and delivered three more on the back nine to finish strong. He hit booming drives and sunk some very nice putts. When it was over he had shaved 9 strokes off his game on this Scorecard winning by 3 strokes over Scotty Shaw.
Mike, relatively new to the OCAGA Tour, and Rookie Robert Juliano, were both quite impressive taking the lion’s share of the SCATS.
Scotty Shaw claimed the low gross score on the day (87), one of three to break 90. Conditions were not ideal with newly plugged greens creating bumpy rides to the holes. Phil Stocker took third place lamenting several putts that bumped away just before dropping. He will enjoy some nice SCAT money taking 3. Glen Chabotar, returning to the tour after several years in rehabilitation, made an early statement taking fourth place and also will take away SCAT profits. Two time defending Champion Glenn Hamm finished fifth. Bumpy Greens aside, the weather was quite nice, fairly warm and not too windy, one of the tour’s better opening days.
There are a few changes in the schedule this year. Next we return to Avalon The last time there (2005) retired player Bud Campion was the winner.
