Swanson’s Health Food stock soared and they introduced a 15 % discount on Green Lipped Mussel supplements, jubilant watching Andy who dominated at the very difficult Shore Gate Track. The hardest course in Cape May County New Jersey elicits chuckles from the staff who revel in the woes of visitors unaware of the test before them. So difficult was the challenge that OCAGA President
Rob Juliano left the course after a dismal front nine and the placing a 9
on the Scorecard to start the back! At the turn he was 11 strokes behind Eddie Borillo, but was still beating Marc Bohan by 5 strokes. It was devastating to the local Italian girl scout troop, given free admission to watch him play.
Watching Andy Swanson however, turned their heads. The international girl scout mantra, “Richie, Richie, he’s too cute!” had faded from consciousness with Antczak’s OCAGA retirement, now several years in the past. Adulation of Andy was boosted to say the least. An unconfirmed rumor from the OCAGA Blog Investigative Reporter was about Antczak’s contention that Swanson deliberately plays from the longest possible tees on the most difficult courses to raise his handicap and that President Juliano’s Handicap System, was specifically designed after the Union League, a super private Philadelphia Bastion of the Elite, bought the Sand Barrens. Andy, a long time member, did not receive an offer to join! Supposedly, Rich was asked if it had anything to do with how Andy likes his women clothed ~ Union League Dress Code: Not Permitted: spandex, open midriffs, halter tops, shorts, leggings, extremely short hemlines (not more than 3″ above the knee), jeans, t-shirts, sneakers, and flip-flops. Apparently, he speculated that Andy was “not considered good enough,” which was put to rest with this victory. The slope and course difficulty from the Union League’s West to North Course Pro Tee Box, its hardest challenge, is 73.3/133. The White Tees at Shore Gate are considerably more formidable, 71/137. Andy Swanson is far more than the current Champion of Shore Gate by winning on the prestigious OCAGA Tour event. On that day he was clearly the best in all of Cape May County.
Charlie Ranucci came out on fire, finding par on three of the first five holes, quickly cutting into the stroke advantage in the 34 Handicap Club and leaving the low handicappers in the dust. Very quickly however, Andy Swanson and Eddie Borillo began to show sweet swings and the match became very interesting. At the turn Charlie had the low net at 43, but Eddie Borillo’s 45 and Swanson’s 47 gave them the lead.
Eddie Borillo, clearly disappointed with himself, took a triple bogey on 11 and then a Snowman on 12 surrendering the lead to Andy. Charlie faltered slightly letting LZ catch him on the 12th hole. Paul Ruth was chipping away at them all, bringing his own hope into the picture. Both Swanson and Lazarchick took a snowman on the very difficult par 5, 13th hole. Borillo and Ruth got a little closer with bogeys. On the par 3, 14th , Eddie, Paul and Andy all doubled par and suddenly looked very vulnerable.
The 16th hole set the stage for excellence. Ranucci and Swanson sunk Birdie, pulling away from their competition, strengthening mental acuity. Borillo suffered through a double on 16 while Lazarchick ended his hopes with a second snowman on the back. Charlie would not catch Eddie, but sailed past LZ. The story however was Andy Swanson. He had held the lead since taking it early on the back and yet let everyone stay in the competition. His game was on and he wanted the taste of victory. His focus softened all distractions. His swing once again became pristine. Allowing only an occasional vision of
the women in the gallery holding hands over their hearts, he played the last four holes, 1 over par, slamming the door shut. Andy Swanson delivered a strong four stroke Win over Eddie Borillo. Ranucci finished third another stroke back. Lazarchick just barely held off Ruth for fourth and fifth respectively.
