HUNTING THE GOLDEN PHEASANT

Hunt’s Pier in Wildwood was jam packed after an installation of the satellite fed Giant Screen TV. The excitement continued to grow as Tommy Hunt battled his way to his second OCAGA Tour Victory this season. Playing in the group with low handicapper on the day, Mike Lazarchick , Tommy felt the pressure of “fast company.” However, opening with par on the first two holes at Golden Pheasant, Hunt was sending a message! His putts gave him a chance on every hole to score well. The one on the first hole was a fourteen footer slightly downhill that hit the center of the cup! He and Lazarchick were even after 4. Tommy dropped 4 strokes on the next three holes and finished the front posting a sweet 46 on the Scorecard.

Note From the OCAGA Investigative Reporter: There were Sandbagging Catcalls from the gallery, but the truth is, no handicaps have been dropping except Lazarchick’s and only then down to his lowest last season. Tommy had two outings over 100, did win Avalon with an 87 (net 61), missed the Vineyards and won Golden Pheasant with a net 68, just a couple of strokes below his handicap. Your handicap takes the best 10 of your last 20 scores in the league. If he puts up a couple more scores under 90, you will see some downward movement.

In the foursome they were following, Charlie Ranucci suffered through a 7 on one, a quadruple 8 on three and then a double on four, not the start he wanted. Playing with Scotty Shaw, who put up 2 sevens , they both finished the front dead even with Hunt. The other low handicap threat, Glenn Hamm, playing in the first group, delivered a very nice 42, even with Lazarchick, but getting a stroke.

Scotty found par three times on the back, but an 8 on 14 put him out of the race. Glenn lost a little of the magic and could not sink a par putt on the back. After opening the back with a pair of sixes, Charlie got down to business, eventually gritting it out by Scotty and then Glenn on the eighteenth. Glenn would finish 5th and Scotty 6th. The Godfather, obviously disappointed with the start, bought a round of drinks for everyone at the Italian Bistro after Charlie took 3 points for closest to the pin on 15 and finished the day 3rd, with a final hole birdie.

Tommy Hunt was in a battle, dropping 5 strokes to Lazarchick in three holes to open the back and then another 2 on 15 and 16. He was only 1 stroke up with two to play. Lazarchick launched a Rocket on 17 directly at the pin. Tommy hit safely a hundred yards shorter and followed with a second shot 15 feet past the cup. Lazarchick was 35 yards from the pin, guarded by rough terrain. He hit a sand wedge too far and it released rolling further back on the green than Hunt. He was tricked by the long downhill putt which turned off sharply to the left when he played it turn right into the cup. Learning from the line Tommy played the putt significantly closer. Lazarchick left the par put 1 inch to the right. Tommy sunk a clutch par! The two stroke cushion was just enough on 18. Both drove the ball under the trees on the right and punched out onto the fairway. Lazarchick put the subsequent 7 iron shot 6 feet from the cup pin high and would drop par. Tommy Hunt hit the front of the green in 3 and 2 putted beautifully to take the win by one. Tommy Hunt beat the best OCAGA had to offer, very successfully Hunting the Golden Pheasant.

Meanwhile, the Godfather, a man of civility, distinction and good taste, told Bruno to put in a complaint about all the noise coming from the Polish American Tavern. Actually, there was quite a ruckus. The Artski Fiveski shrine was expanded. Lazarchick was finally added to the monument dedicated to the triumphs of Czak and Scotty Shaw. The old crew toasts Art every day as ” the Greatest to Ever Play on the OCAGA Tour.” They are clear no one will ever break his record of Five Championships. The young crowd tired of hearing the toast , over and over again, retort “Scotty Shaw, he’s our Man, Tough as Nails and a Heart that Can.” Well, it’s a Polish Bar and he has won a title. This year Scotty is playing through the pain of broken toes and other minor maladies. Despite his still growing reputation as “Dr. Second Place,” Mike Lazarchick does have a small following. With three tournaments left in the 2014 season, despite his recent second consecutive second place finish, Mike has vaulted into first place in the Race to the Final Four. Looks like he’ll get another shot at the title. In his first five attempts he finished second every time.

It was the Polish Princesses (local girl scout troop) however, who created most of the disturbing clamor. They wanted to turn off the tournament and watch heartthrob Andy Swanson and local favorite pretty boy, Rich Antzak, run in the marathon. They kept chanting, “Richie, Richie, He’s Toooo Cute!” Of course they want to replace current poster boy Swanson with their Richie, at the national level.

Points with 3 to GO
92 Lazarchick, Mike In the Driver’s Seat
89 Hamm, Glen Wants to make it 3 in a row
83 Unger, Mike Has cooled off since great Season Start
77 Shaw, Scott Needs to Heal Body
75 Ranucci, Charles Making a Serious Charge
70 Hunt, Tom Already has two this season
69 Hamm, David Can’t miss tournaments
68 Czachorowski, Art Known for strong finishes
67 Chabotar, Glen Carrying a hefty Handicap, Finished 4th at the Tough Pheasant
66 Swanson, Andy Would rather run
56 Borillo, Ed Former Champ with a Slight Glimmer of Hope
51 Stocker, Phil Would need to win all three and see falter at the top
46 Bohan, Marc Watch out next season
27 Beuchner, John Out for Season
21 O’Brien, Mike May Return from Surgery
21 Antczak, Rich Can only be a spoiler

Not one in first place with three to go has missed the final four. Lazarchick has been very impressive in the last three tournaments. Glen Hamm is the two time defending Champion and in a great place to try for three. Mike Unger still has a lot of points, but cannot afford blow-ups like the Pheasant. Charlie Ranucci has finished strong in the last two tournaments. Tommy Hunt is only 5 point out of fourth place. Both Charlie and Tommy missed a tournament this season. David Hamm, Art Czachorowski, Glen Chabotar and Andy Swanson all need to visit the winners circle. However, they are all less than 10 points from fourth place. It will be almost impossible for the others to make a run at the final four unless they WIN,WIN,WIN and probably need points for Closest to the Pin.

SCATS

Charlie Ranucci and Rob Juliano took the Big payday in the SCATS Competition. Charlie pockets a cool $45.50 and Rob was close behind with $35.50

Next the OCAGA visits Greentree for the first time on the Tour.

RANUCCI AND LAZARCHICK IN TITANIC BATTLE FOR THE JEWELS

The Godfather was pleased. He was enjoying his after dinner, Amaro Fernet Branca. It never tasted better. He had been on the edge of his seat watching Big Charlie battle the Polack Lazarchick at Emerald Links. Finally, he thought, the season is getting on track.

Charlie and Mike started with Bogey on the Scorecard.  On two Charlie nailed the shot taking closest to the pin and just missed the Birdie. Lazarchick hit it fat off the tee and settled for a 4. The advantage held until four. Charlie took a bogey and Mike dropped a beautiful putt for par, all even. They both dropped par on five. Lazarchick drove a beauty down the right side on six, but it hit the top of the bunker and spun back. Not enough loft on the second shot gave him another bunker shot, followed by a shot just over the ditch into the high rough. The rough was tough. The ensuing 7 was disappointing. Charlie was beautiful all the way to the green and suck a nice Birdie for a 3 stroke lead. Hot putting by Mike allowed him to shave off 2 strokes at the turn, down 1 starting the back.

They started the back matching two straight for Bogey. On twelve, Lazarchick sent a booming drive over the 150 post but it was slicing big time. He would not find his ball. He played his next shot to the rough and struggled to his second 7 on the day. Charlie fought hard, missed the putt, but gained another stroke tapping in 6. Charlie extended the lead with  his second closest to pin on thirteen.  He missed the Birdie but LZ missed the par. On fourteen, Charlie drove the fairway with a beauty. Mike sent a monster drive down the right side that looked at least two yards left of the woods. He figured it would bounce right and might even make the fairway and it was out there! He never found his ball. Both played well to the green. Charlie dropped 5 to Mike’s 6 and took the biggest lead on the day, 4 strokes. The Godfather was ecstatic! He told Bruno to buy a round for all the patrons at the Italian Bistro. He was sure Charlie would not drop 4 strokes in 4 holes.  LZ  and Charlie played safe on fifteen with shots down the middle. LZ however, nailed the pin for a 3 foot Birdie taking back a stroke on Charlie’s par. They both hit the green on sixteen, but Mike took closest to the pin. Charlie’s longer putt almost dropped. LZ hit a 12 footer center cup but an inch short. The rough played havoc on 17. Mike was able to get his third shot just in front of the green and pitched close enough to save par. Charlie was not so fortunate. With tired arms,  he struggled to a snowman. The match was tied!

Charlie hit safely into the fairway and would settle for a bogey. LZ sent his first drive high and slightly left out of sight. He blasted  a provisional down the center of the fairway. He never found the first ball. His next shot rolled to the back of the green and the ensuing putt was not far enough.  They finished 1, 2 for the tournament, Charlie posting the low gross score (83) on the day.

While Ranucci and Lazarchick were battling for low gross, Former Champion Eddie Borillo was trying to win the tournament.  He dropped par on 3, 4 & 5, before stumbling to a 9 & 8 on seven and eight.  After a 7 on ten, Edddie settled down to a better pace.  With 3 more dropped for par on the back he finished in third place, (94 – net 69), now in striking distance of the top four.  Andy Swanson and David Hamm continued their march towards the final four taking 4th and 5th on the day.  Overall David is tied for 3rd and Andy is a couple of points back in 5th.

Glenn Hamm edges out Unger at the Vineyards

Glenn Hamm started with three double bogeys. Mike Unger posted three sevens on the front 9.  Mike Lazarchick however was on Fire at the Vineyards, center cutting the fairways and sending approach shots near or on the greens. Lazarchick would set a blazing pace with two bogies and a birdie over nine, to make the turn with a 37 on the Scorecard. The back nine was a different game. Mike Unger played pretty close to bogie golf, hitting beautiful drives and sinking putts that he needed. Glen Hamm carved up the course. Glen shot three over par helped by a spectacular 15th hole. He blasted a long, long drive on the par five, followed by a picture perfect fairway wood to within 10 feet of the cup. The eagle attempt just skirted the hole and left a tap in Birdie. Lazarchick lead the field through 13. On 14 he finally missed a fairway, slicing way up a hill into heavy rough. His next shot opened in the rough and he sent the ball under a tree. Missing a putt at a distance he had negotiated well all day, gave him a triple. The 15th proved even a greater challenge. He delivered a weak drive and proceeded to just miss every club he choose to play suffering through a snowman.  He was now three behind Unger and two behind Hamm. With a par on 16 he got one back from Glenn and 2 back from Mike.  They all scored 5 on 17 and the match was up for grabs. Both Hamm and Unger sunk a 5. Lazarchick missed his short iron to the green, then pitched and putted poorly for a 7.  Glen Hamm finished with a gross 84 in a net tie with Mike Unger.  Lazarchick fell to third. It was a very exciting match! Andy Swanson and David Hamm finished 4th and 5th. Andy’s second Birdie on the day at 16 got him close and David struggled with a 7  on 18 to quell his hopes.

POINTS AFTER A THIRD OF THE SEASON

In SCATS, Lazarchick and Glenn Hamm took the Lion’s Share with a total of $35 & $31 respectively.  Swanson was hot taking $27.50 in the Handicapped category. If he had played in Scratch he would have needed a wheelbarrow!  Art Czachorowski finally showed his stuff pocketing $18.

Tommy Hunt Terrific at Avalon

Tommy Hunt, David Hamm and Rich Antczak finish 1, 2,3 at Avalon playing well below their handicaps!  Hunt placed 5 pars on the Scorecard easily offsetting two 7s and two 6s and easily breaking 90. His gross 87 was only two more than Marc Bohan, second lowest on the day. David Hamm was equally impressive posting a gross 89, just a stroke higher than his dad. Hunt and Hamm played with the big boys, beating all the low handicappers by over 10 Strokes when net scores were calculated.  Taking third, Rich Antczak displayed a much more controlled game. That giant swing that produced soaring drives but not a lot of consistent accuracy has been replaced by a slower sweeter approach to the game and it showed!  Art Czachorowski finished fourth with a gross 87, getting closer to the form that won 5 Leagues Titles. Mike Unger finished fifth, again demonstrating a much improved game with long drives in play! VEGAS has dropped the odds and believes Unger will return to the winners circle before this season is over.

In the SCATS competition, David Hamm took home a boatload (5 for over $40), including three darts safely closest to the pin on the par threes. Phil Stocker had a nice $25 pay day collecting 3 Scats. Hunt and Glen Chabotar had 2 each for $17.

MIKE UNGER TAKES SAND BARRENS

It was all Mike Unger in the first tournament on the 2014 OCAGA Tour. Back in October he was able to do no better than 103. But the spring opener at the Sand Barrens was a different story.  He dropped par putts on the first and third holes and delivered three more on the back nine to finish strong. He hit booming drives and sunk some very nice putts. When it was over he had shaved 9 strokes off his game on this Scorecard winning by 3 strokes over Scotty Shaw.

Mike, relatively new to the OCAGA Tour, and Rookie Robert Juliano,  were both quite impressive taking the lion’s share of the SCATS.

Scotty  Shaw claimed the low gross score on the day (87), one of three to break 90. Conditions were not ideal with newly plugged greens creating bumpy rides to the holes. Phil Stocker took third place lamenting several putts that bumped away just before dropping. He will enjoy some nice SCAT money taking 3. Glen Chabotar, returning to the tour after several years in rehabilitation, made an early statement taking fourth place and also will take away SCAT profits. Two time defending Champion Glenn Hamm finished fifth.  Bumpy Greens aside, the weather was quite nice, fairly warm and not too windy, one of the tour’s better opening days.

There are a few changes in the schedule this year. Next we return to Avalon  The last time there  (2005) retired player Bud Campion was the winner.

Two in a Row – Glenn Hamm 2013 Champion!

One of the better Championship Sundays at Greate Bay, it was mostly sunny, not too cold, but the wind was in play. The Final Four featured the lowest set of handicaps in modern OCAGA Tour history.  Six strokes separated Marc Bohan (9) from Charlie Ranucci and Glen Hamm (15) with Scotty Shaw at 14. There would be little room for error and the match promised a battle to the finish. The greens were lightening fast with breaks to challenge even the most seasoned putters.  After nine Scotty Shaw held the edge, with strokes ahead of Glenn by 1,  and Marc & Charlie by 4.  On number 10, Glenn stayed one behind, Charlie fell off another stroke and Marc cut the lead down to 2.  On 11, Charlie took a snowman hit. Scotty suffered through a triple bogey. Marc  pulled into a tie with Scotty and Glenn took the lead by 1. Number 12, the second hardest hole on the card would be the deciding hole. Disaster struck both Scotty and Marc . The 12th hole, rated second hardest on the course requires a nice drive over a marsh. A drive too far left can find the water and too far right will find the trees.  A nice drive down the middle can still leave a challenging second shot, over the water to an uphill green. Losing balls and a tough putting pin placement can quickly add up to 10!  Ask both Scotty and Marc. Glen pushed up his lead managing a double on 12 and a nice par on 13. Despite a valiant charge by Marc who picked up 9 strokes on the last 5 holes, Glenn Hamm held on to repeat as OCAGA Champion. He beat the best OCAGA had to offer!

In the Hanko Memorial  2 man format, Art Czachorowski and Rich Antczak were an awesome team besting the field by a full 9 strokes posting an 82. Mike Lazarchick and John Beauchner finished a distant 2nd .

Ranucci & Hamm High Handicappers for Championship!!!

Posting a net 68 on the Scorecard, Scotty Shaw and Charlie Ranucci  send a message for Championship Sunday. For Charlie it sealed most points for the regular season. They tied  for the victory.

It was Ranucci’s second victory at the Sand Barrens this year.  He took the opening day tournament. Shaw won the mid-season Emerald Links Tournament.

Joining them in the final four are Marc Bohan and Glenn Hamm. It promises to be an exciting challenge with four players so close in strokes.

Mike Lazarchick and John Beuchner also delivered net 68 performances taking 3rd and 4th on the day.

Eddie Borillo took 6th place followed by Marc Bohan.  Jeff spickler just fell short of the final four with a 7th place finish missing by only 5 points. Glenn Hamm, despite missing the last tournament,  held Jeff off.  John Beuchner, despite his great finish was just too far back.

SCATMAN 2013

Glenn Hamm won Handicapped SCATMAN of the Year collecting over $150 in Winnings. Marc Bohan ran away with the Scratch Title winning over $100.

Conflagration Erupts at White Oaks While Tour “Professional Counselor” Tromps Across Europe.

Don St George was born and raised in a generation where authority figures were honored and the rules counted. The game of golf is one of honor and those that cheat are cheating themselves. We have had members in the past who were accused of not following the rules. While the OCAGA tour is not the PGA tour, infractions have been called in the past. For example, your secretary mentioned to Bud Campion it was a penalty when Bud tapped in a three inch putt and hit the pin. It is a two stroke penalty if you hit the pin while putting, wherever it is on the green and regardless of who put it there.  Bud said you are right and took a penalty. No argument.

Don has long been our rules man and indeed did provide official rules books to every member a couple of years ago.  Every player has the right to call a penalty when the rules have been violated and ignorance of the rules is not an excuse. Apparently Don called rookie Terry Matla for a penalty when Terry asks another player what club he used to hit.  A player may not ask for or give advice. Advice is any information that could influence the player in his choice of club, or how to play the shot.

In Stroke play-the penalty for asking or giving advice is 2-strokes. In this case if a player asks a question that would assist his play, he receives a 2-stroke penalty. If his fellow competitor answers him, he would also receive a 2- stroke penalty.  ~    http://www.usga.org/RulesFAQ/rules.asp

This is clearly another black mark on the Shaw Administration. The secretary was not available to calm flaring tempers and the ensuing discussion became heated all the way into the clubhouse! Don St George resigned after many years in the league and Rookie Terry Matla Quit!  How unfortunate!

Meanwhile, even with the penalty Terry delivered a beautiful round of golf, placing a net 65 on the Scorecard beating out Eddie Borillo by a stroke to Win the White Oaks Tournament. Don St George was just edged out by Jack Haines who took third place. Don’s game had steadily improved and he elevated himself to third place overall with this finish.   Don is in strong position to make the final four with One Tournament to go!

One hopes that cooler heads will prevail and everything has calmed down. Both Don and Terry are assets to the OCAGA Tour

116   Ranucci

110   Hamm, G

105   St George

103   Shaw

97     Bohan

90     Spickler

83     Haines

81     Swanson

78     Ruth

If Don does indeed remain out, Haines, Swanson and Ruth are still mathematically in the race. The more likely final four will come from the top six. Jeff Spickler put himself into the thick of it, with a fifth place finish at the Oaks and a three point closest to the pin. Scotty Shaw, taking 6th place,  bested Bohan (8th) and both Ranucci and Hamm, who had a relatively difficult day.  VEGAS still has both Ranucci and Hamm going to the final four, but even Charlie can lose it if the five behind him play well and Charlie does not!

Buena Vista not such a Beautiful View!

Once again, Buena Vista proved to be a challenge for the OCAGA Tour and everybody showed! Weather beaten fairways called for rolling the ball but high rough everywhere caught a lot of clubs, forcing errant shots. The sand traps for those making trips to the beach, ran the gamut from hard pan to thick sand.  Almost half the field scored over 100 and only  Marc Bohan was able to break 90, delivering a  low gross score of 82, taking 3rd place.  The real battle was between two veterans who used the experience of years and a lot of nice, easy swings to compensate for the lack of distance they enjoyed in earlier years.

The Godfather’s body guard asked if Valerio was Italian. The Godfather after a puff of his Tuscanello Anise cigar responded,  Valerio is a male given name in several languages, derived from the  Roman surname  Valerius, which itself is derived from the  Latin verb valere – “to be strong.”

Val Fransel’s Sweet Swing was on Fire!

Don St George Goes to Long Putter

Valario Fransel, once known for Booming drives from a body that in his heavy days barely tipped the scale at 100, played a very nice game. His net 90, second low gross on the day, was just enough to squeak by Don St George who is having a remarkable comeback season after missing all of 2012 on the disabled list.  Giving Don a stroke, Val came out of the gate weak and was promptly four strokes behind Don. By the third hole it was 5 strokes!  Pulling himself back into the game, Val began to chip away at the leader and by the 8th hole he pulled even. After 9 he was 1 up and after 10 took his greatest lead at 2. Don hung in with beautiful straight shots, putts that dropped, and tied the match again at 13. From then on it continued to be very tight to the end. Val was able to take and put a one stroke victory on the Scorecard, his first since the 2010 season.

Andy Swanson , John Buechner  and Paul Ruth finished 4th, 5th  and 6th  delivering nice games and keeping their final four hopes alive. Andy moved up nicely into 7th place overall, however 14 point out of fourth place. He needs to win a tournament.   Paul farther down the point list really needs to score well in the final two tournaments and John has a big hill to climb.

Image

Who Hit that Booming Ball?

Jeff Spickler shares a moment of glory with his many fans. He is well known for strutting his stuff on the Dance Floor.

Scotty Shaw played well enough to move closer to the top. Both Don St George and Marc Bohan are in position to displace him with two to go. Charlie Ranucci and Glenn Hamm faltered at Buena, but still lead the pack by comfortable margins so late in the season. White Oaks will be a big one for all those in contention.

Glove exudes corruption!

Shaw. “I always have time for the little people.”

Mike Lazarchick will not be there. Once a factor in league play, rumor has it he has fallen upon hard times. On numerous occasions he has been asked why he drives with a two wood. Perhaps he cannot afford a Driver? Since retirement he has had to deal with a fixed income.   OCAGA President Scotty Shaw is rumored to be introducing an OCAGA Foundation to offer those in need, clearly in an effort to dispel any rumors of corruption in his administration.  We found no evidence that Shaw purportedly is being advised by a PR Firm on ways he might improve his image.  The OCAGA News Blog Star Photographer was able to capture a photo of Lazarchick’s glove (above) adding substance to the possibility of insufficient funds?   If asked, it is possible that Eddie Borillo would suggest taking money from the SCATS competition to fund the foundation.

Hamm Cooks the Pheasant

A case of Hamm’s Beer was delivered to the Italian Bistro. Undaunted, the Godfather, who had been enjoying Peroni’s finest, rerouted it to the Polish American Tavern.

Current Club Champion Glenn Hamm made a strong statement at Golden Pheasant swinging his way to a decisive victory,  He climbed into second place overall, just six behind Charlie Ranucci, who has been sizzling hot all season.  With two to go, VEGAS has the pair at overwhelming odds to be in the Final Four.  Glenn’s gross 80 was the low score of the day. While carrying the highest handicap he had had at this point in the season for years, he was indeed a formidable opponent.   Charlie was able to maintain his league lead finishing fourth on the day posting an 82 on the Scorecard. Scotty Shaw was most disappointed. He held on to third place overall despite struggling through a hefty 94 strokes. David Hamm finished six keeping his hopes alive. He now sits in fourth place overall.    Jeff Spickler, Don St George and Marc Bohan are all within striking distance, less than 10 points behind. They need to win a tournament or at least score in the top five to get into play.  A little further down,  a group in the fifty point area have a much larger hill to climb.

Next Buena Vista, traditionally the course that brings significant challenge to the pretenders. A year ago, Tommy Hunt added sparkle to his magical regular season winning Buena 2012 and skyrocketing to a hefty first place point lead. However, Charlie took second, Scotty was forth and Marc was sixth posting the loss gross score. Taking third place, Phil Stocker made a move towards the final four.

Meanwhile, the OCAGA Investigative Reporter discovered a slip in sponsorship funding. Scotty Shaw was apparently accused of operating the most secretive administration in OCAGA Tour History. A purported survey indicated that no one could even remember a President’s Message? Rumor has it, the scheduling treasurer might have lost some of his sparkle and was unable to secure the traditional green fees for championship Sunday at Greate Bay. The secretary was obviously late with material for the OCAGA News Blog which as you see is finally out less than a week before the next tournament. What happened to the new Blog Photographer? This story will be further investigated. No OCAGA president has ever been impeached.
