Hamm Cooks the Pheasant Again!

HammHeadShotGlenn Hamm posted the low gross score for the third consecutive tournament, vaulting into first place in the point total (103 Points), easily winning Golden Pheasant for his second straight victory on the OCAGA Tour.   He dropped 13 for par and never gave up the lead after a front 9 with 40 strokes. Club Champion Michael Lazarchick suffered through a triple bogey 10th hole. With an otherwise hot back nine, he was only able to finish two strokes off the pace. He placed 9 pars and a birdie on the Scorecard securing second place. Lazarchick did sneak into 4th place currently in the race to the final four. While VEGAS gives him a chance to make the finals to defend his title, Hamm is an overwhelming favorite to go all the way!  A Tribute to Hamm purportedly went viral on the internet shortly after Glenn’s latest impressive display. Glenn with 4 OCAGA Tour Championships is in hot pursuit of Art Czachorowski’s Record.

Third place on the day went to Eddie Borillo who took a Faint Glimmer of Hope to the 2002 Tour Championship. Eddie is now in position to contend for the coveted 4th spot in the Final Four.  Don St George with 98 points and even Marc Bohan at 89 points are unlikely to be caught.  With tournament turnout  at a torpid trend, two few tour players partition the top from tenth or twelfth, twisting tabulations to tinier totals.  That was the gist of the discussion at the Polish American Tavern.  Certainly Scotty Shaw and perhaps Art Czachorowski are still within striking distance of Lazarchick, but there are not so many points between first and last place without a full contingent of players.  Of course the Tavern Old Guard wants Art to make it and knock Hamm down another peg!

TOP TEN with 3 to GO

  • 103  Hamm, Glen
  • 98   St George, Don
  • 89   Bohan, Marc
  • 73   Lazarchick, Mike
  • 70   Shaw, Scotty
  • 68   Swanson, Andy
  • 63   Borillo, Ed
  • 63   Czachorowski, Art
  • 61   Hunt, Tom
  • 55   Chabotar, Glen

Meanwhile the OCAGA Filmagrapher was able to secure footage of the Earl of Brentwood getting ready for the St George’s Day Celebrations of 2015. The St George Brewery has experienced record sales (10/20% growth) in direct relationship t0 Don’s success. At the Polish American Diner the big discussion was whether or not the actor playing Scotty Shaw, looked enough like Scotty,  in the documentary about Shaw’s Red Deer’s Queen’s Diner.

St George continues to take bucks in the handicap SCATS and Marc Bohan maintains his lead in the Scratch Group.

This is not Trick  Photography. Prior to the delayed start at Emerald Links, the OCAGA Photographers were making pictures of tour players for fan purchase. The photos automatically are stamped with the time. Hearing about the time delay, despite Phil’s objection, Tommy Hunt went home to be with his grandchildren. Because they were in the 1st group,  Phil Stocker was “beside” himself.  Shortly thereafter Phil was captured in two different rooms “beside” one another  at the same time.  The OCAGA News Investigative Reporter is in pursuit of further details and will get to the bottom of this phenomena.Retired teacher from EHT: 2 holes-in-one in same round

Phil Stocker is Amazing. The two time OCAGA Champion continued to thrill his fans dropping 2 Holes in One during a practice round.

Norwegian Cruise Lines now offers a 2 for 1 special called the Stocker!

Don Visualizing Success

Glenn Hamm,  Marc Bohan and Don St George continued to display masterful skill  on a day when Emerald Links significantly challenged the majority.  It was not terribly warm and the wind was howling at times throwing question marks at club selections. Hamm for the second straight tournament placed the low gross (this time 83) on the scorecard. Marc delivered an 84 and Charlie Ranucci was way up at 90, a testament to the conditions.  Don was next with a 91 and that gave him a second place finish behind winner Glen Hamm. At the half point in the regular season St George, now the point leader, Hamm and Bohan seem to be pulling away from the pack in the race to the final four!

TOP TEN AT THE MID POINT IN THE REGULAR SEASON

  1.  81   Don St George
  2.  78   Glenn Hamm
  3.  77   Marc Bohan
  4.  59   Andy Swanson
  5.  51    Scotty Shaw
  6.  50   Michael Lazarchick
  7.  50   Art Czachorowski
  8.  48   Phil Stocker
  9.  47   Charlie Ranucci
  10.  44   Tom Hunt

The debate on the race to the Final Four was vigorous at the Polish American Tavern.  Andy Swanson won the opener at the Sand Barrens. Since then he has progressively finished  farther down in each tournament.  To Tavern loyals, clearly, Scotty Shaw, Michael Lazarchick and Art Czachorowski were now in a tight race and certainly the favorites to take the final spot on Championship Sunday! There was considerable “Trash Talking”, disparaging Andy Swanson. However when rebuilding of the Trophy Wall became the topic,  serious confusion followed about Polish Nails, apparently being sold by Swanson Health Foods?

SCATMAN 2015

Rich Antczak and Michael Lazarchick took the lion’s share in the handicapped group. Marc Bohan continued his dominance in the Scratch Group.

Hamming it UP!

David & Daddy at Pinelands

David & Daddy at Pinelands

David Hamm was just magnificent at Pinelands, beating his Dad and Don St George by 3 Strokes to take the win. David sent booming drives high into the sky using his 3 wood off the tees and the majority were right down the middle. He broke 90 by placing par on the Scorecard 7 times. This is David’s second tour victory, his first in 2009 at the Sand Barrens.  He played so very well against significant pressure from an impressive trio of opponents, 4 time club champion Dad, low handicapper Marc Bohan and current club champ Michael Lazarchick. Glenn improved as the day got longer to take second place dropping 8 for par. Most impressive however was his recovery on the 14th hole, after a drive that was blasted deep right into the middle of the adjoining fairway. The foursome there were clearly awed as Glenn sent his second shot over the trees and onto the fringe of the par five green! He two putted for an easy Birdie! His 81 was low gross on the day. Hamm’s Beer purportedly announced a new video featuring David and Glenn in a Golf Segment that is expected to compete with the famous baseball clip.

Cool and Collected!

Cool and Collected!

Don St George continued to make an early season statement taking a 3rd place finish. With six dropped for par Don was showing the stuff that at one time had him as one of the lowest handicaps in the league. The St George Volcano Hotel in California, with only the rumor that Don may visit, is selling rooms like hotcakes! Don is in 2nd place for point total after 1/3 of the season putting his fans in a gleeful frenzy.  Don Continues to collect SCAT money and he does very much enjoy that! ♥

Center Photo Champions Wall at Tavern

The Polish American Tavern was finally experiencing the revelry that dominates the neighbor.  Other than the local girl scouts crying girl%20scout%20crying%20fp.JPG with the absence of heartthrob Richie Antczak, the neighborhood was near euphoria watching the tournament unfold.   Five time Champion, the legendary Art Czachorowski,  Mr. President Scotty Shaw and current Tour Champion Michael Lazarchick finished 4th, 5th and 6th.  Fans were crippled with fear in the off season when news of Art’s medical battle hit the airwaves. Choking at the banquet was a bad enough experience for the faithful, but the big “C” tore at their heart strings.  Art’s return to health and moving nearer to his former self have lightened hearts. Needless to say, “Artski Sixski” chants once again rang clarion throughout the day.

Scotty Shaw has been impressive this year, currently in 5th place for overall points. While a small crowd of detractors continues to accuse Shaw of the most secretive administration in OCAGA history, the OCAGA News Investigative Reporter

Heavenly Light?

Heavenly Light?

has uncovered another view of his demeanor found in Poland, an article written by the Felician Sisters , about Scotty. In the article, Shaw’s silence is viewed as his uncompromising ability to view the world with non judgment and his sheer love of humanity. Those gifted with clairvoyance have argued that Scotty often responds to questions with a wry smile, a continence of omnipotent knowing, and a gentleness that radiates as light from his being. The OCAGA Photographer confirmed that this photo obtained from the sisterhood, was not “Photoshopped”. It is real!  WOW!

Little has been scene from the Current Champ this season on the field of play until this current “shadow” revealed itself last Sunday. His supporters at the Tavern remind us that

Shadow of LZ in Phil's Eye

Shadow of LZ in Phil’s Eye

the Doctor started fairly slow last year not starting his charge until May.  Of course, once he took the lead, it was not relinquished.  Phil Stocker, his partner in the Monday Night Leagues sees him best. He named him LZ and helped him break through the final barrier when they defeated three formidable duos to take the 2012 Championship.  The Doctor has often said that his partner give him Inspiration!

Marc Bohan finished 7th displaying some nice putting on fairly slow greens. Marc of course is from perhaps the most accomplished  father/son combo to have ever played the OCAGA Tour. Dr. John Bohan was OCAGA Tour Champion back in 1972. Marc was Champion in 1996. Marc with 60 points is currently in the lead for the Final Four.

SCATS

The big winners were Shaw, St George & Swanson in Handicapped and Marc Bohan in Scratch.

Chabotar Captures Avalon Victory

ATT_1432502375752_20150503_083309-1-1Once again Glen Chabotar showed early season poise taking Avalon by 5 strokes over Marc Bohan, Roger Reed and Don St George. Glen last won in 2010 taking the opener at Sand Barrens.  Brigantine  was captured both in 05 and 09. Twisted Dunes was another early victory in 2005.  The Red Flash golf coach purportedly speaks of Glen when inspiring his young team before a big match. While attending St Francis University, Chabotar was primarily known for academic achievement. However, since on the OCAGA Tour, Glen’s moments of brilliance and his ability to rake in the SCAT money has elevated his athletic appeal. He needed a wheel barrow for all the bucks he won during the 2013 season! If he can only secure a Tour Championship, pundits believe he will be added along side his brother, Kent John, on the list of distinguished St Francis Graduates.

Marc Bohan, 1996 Club Champion, placed a sweet 78 on the Scorecard, low gross score 20150503_083303on the day. Every time Marc finishes 2nd, his loyal fans complain that he is giving up too many strokes to high handicappers. Marc has his share of regular season victories and is not even close to Lazarchick’s number of 2nd place finishes! When he is swinging the club well, he is truly poetry in motion!

Two Time Club Champion Phil Stocker and Marc were captured by the OCAGA News Photographer, discussing their Swing Philosophies at Avalon while waiting to tee off before the last tournament.

Young Roger Reed, OCAGA Rookie, showed off his stuff taking third place in only his second tour tournament. 20150503_114639-1Sporting an impressively low handicap, Roger was throwing darts at the par threes! His signature playing card shows how close he set the standard for closest to the hole!  He took CTP on both #3 and #11.

Don St George delivered a beautiful game to take fourth place on the day. Of course there is much “folklore” about Don slaying dragons during his youth. Some historical documents even speculate and debate the time of his death. Of course we know he is alive and kicking, defying the ravages of time. Pictured  here on the right, Don is doing a new pre- tee off jig, now known20150503_083215-1 as the Don St George Shuffle! Obviously the new moves are working. St George fans want desperately to see Don make the final four!

Scotty Shaw was also impressive finishing 5th on the day. There was considerable concern when the president fell just prior to tee 20150503_085535-1 (1)off. The investigative reported was unable to determine if Scotty was wearing alternative spikes or if there had been an attempt on his life. Questions always arise when conspiracy theorists discuss how many OCAGA presidents have met untimely deaths! Shaw of  course, has been accused of leading the most secretive administration in years. He rarely give press conferences and presidential messages in the OCAGA News Blog are few and far in between. The OCAGA Investigative Reporter in an exclusive interview learned that the President wants to move the tour to the Blue Tees, with one notable exception! When asked about the old guys, he said since he liked Mike O’Brien, OB would be able to play from the front tees.

Andy Swanson, Mike O’Brien,Glenn Hamm, Charlie Ranucci and Rob Juliano rounded out the top ten.

EARLY RACE FOR THE FINAL FOUR

  • 46   Marc Bohan
  • 40   Andy Swanson
  • 37   Don St George
  • 33   Charles Ranucci
  • 30   Glen Chabotar
  • 30   Glenn Hamm
  • 30   Tom Hunt
  • 29    Roger Read
  • 27    Mike O’Brien
  • 27    Scotty Shaw

SCATS

With only 9 SCATS in both categories, in the Handicapped Group, Scotty Shaw and Rob Juliano were the big winners , each taking 2 for $31.11. In the Scratch group, Shaw took 4, Read took 3 and Bohan took the last 2.

Swanson Stupendous in the Opener!

SwansonEagleOpening Day was among the most pleasant the OCAGA Tour has experienced. The weather was fairly mild in the mid 60s on the Fahrenheit scale. Wind was not a major factor on most holes, however the white tees seemed pretty far back according to Phil Stocker who remembers every course he plays! Only five players on the tour were able to break 100. Among them, Andy Swanson placed a nice 92 on the Scorecard, (net 72), dropping 1 Birdie and 6 for Par, good enough to take 1st place at the Sand Barrens. There was an immediate jump in Swanson Health Stock. Not since Andrew bested the crowd with his Eagle on the Gambler in Myrtle Beach has he looked so dominant on the links.

Phil Stocker fans once again protested the handicap system, questioning how Swanson remained at 20 after posting so many low scores, while Stocker remained at 20 posting high scores? The OCAGA News Investigative Reporter was unable to determine if this “feud” was at all related to the Swedish-Norwegian War of 1812, or what their ancestors’ position was on the Convention of Moss. Meanwhile, Norwegian Cruise Lines still has pictures of Phil winning the back to back 2008 and 2009 OCAGA Championships! Andy is still hunting his first title.

Marc Bohan was clearly in the zone taking 2nd place with a sweet 84 (net 74). Bloomburg reported swift trading in Bohan Company Stock. Marc took the OCAGA Title in 1996. Big Charlie Ranucci also broke 90 (net 74) eliciting a big smile from the Godfather. Charlie took 3rd and now is regarded as the best player on the tour to not have won a Championship! Tommy Hunt was respectable in the opener. His 100 (net 74) gave him 4th place. Four time OCAGA Champion Glenn Hamm took 5th with a 95 (net 80). The fifth player to break 100 was Rookie Roger Reed. Young Roger promises to be a formidable opponent sporting a 12 handicap. Roger posted a 92 in his first OCAGA Outing.  Rounding out the Top Ten were David Hamm, Don St George, Phil Stocker, Mike O’Brien and Eddie Borillo.

The Polish American Tavern was relatively quiet. The best the group could do was current champion Lazarchick’s 11th place finish. All the tavern stars were well into the 100s, the highest total strokes the quartet has ever taken in the same tournament. There was a demonstration outside in support of Rich Antczak who replaced Andy Swanson as national girl scout poster boy a year ago.  Despite the number of strokes he used to transverse the course, the girls just swoon when they see Richie.

girlscoutsDespite Swanson’s opening day heroics,   local   troop    leader Elizaveta Kwiatkowski proclaimed undying support which was followed   by  a  chorus  of, (did you guess) ,

“Richie, Richie, he’s tooo Cute!”

SCATMAN 2015

Marc Bohan grabbed 4 SCATS in the Scratch Competition pocketing almost $25 . The Big Winner on the Day however was Phil Stocker, collecting 3 SCATS in the Handicapped field for a whopping $46.67.

5th Time a Charm – LAZARCHICK Takes OCAGA TOUR CHAMPIONSHIP

Michael C. Lazarchick, the Doctor, aka LZ, the nickname bestowed by his buddy Phil Stocker, had played a masterful season. Mike Unger had started the season with a 1st and 2nd in the first three tournaments and the point lead. The Doctor shot a blazing 37 on the front at the Vineyards only to watch Glenn Hamm almost duplicate the effort on the back. Both Hamm and Unger edged him out of a win. At Emerald Links however, only Charlie Ranucci kept him from the winners circle and then at Golden Pheasant Tommy Hunt took him by a stroke earned on the 17th hole. But, close was good enough to take over the point lead in the regular season and he would not relinquish the lead after the Pleasant. Scotty Shaw got close when he humbled Green Tree with the best low gross (78) all year on the OCAGA Tour.

Now on his fifth trip to Championship Play, LZ held the record with 4 second place finishes. He was so very good at coming in second both in the finals and during the regular season. The Doctor was viewed by many as the best veteran on the tour who had not won a Championship. He was a minor figure at the Polish American Tavern with a few fans, while the legendary 5 time Champion, Art Czachorowski, was Saintly and Scotty Shaw had all the young male and female fans. LZ would give Mike Unger 10 Strokes. Scotty Shaw who had giving up a stroke beating LZ in his last attempt was now getting a stroke. Glen Hamm who put him away in the attempt prior giving a stroke, was now also getting a stroke. Winning the Regular Season Point title was nice. On Championship Sunday however, they started all even, playing 18 holes, counting handicaps!

Greate Bay (Course Hole by Hole) was a chilly 56 degrees with gusting wind. LZ preferred warm and calm. He wore long underwear thinking he could always peal down if it warmed. Actually, he would play wearing a jacket well into the back nine. Hamm suggested a side bet and they agreed on $5 for a Greenie and $1 for Nasties (in the cup from off the green), Sandys (out of the sand and in the hole in 2) or Birdies.

Scotty Shaw was the first to tee off. No one was looking. Hamm and Unger sent the ball down the right side just off the fair way. LZ with his two wood, hit the ball down the middle. The foursome searched for Scotty’s drive, left and right, up and down, no where to be found. Scotty re-teed. He sent a beauty down the left side and followed with a shot 3 feet from the cup. LZ was on in 2 and found par. Hamm and Unger made bogey with Shaw. Shaw grumbled it would have been Birdie if that first ball had not disappeared! Okay, thought LZ, I am even with Shaw and Hamm, good start.

The 2nd hole, number one handicap, was further shielded by a fierce wind directly in the face of the competitors. Mike Unger was deadly. Drove the ball beautifully, approached the green well and dropped the bogey. Lazarchick and Shaw took a six and Hamm settled for seven. LZ and Shaw agreed if he continues like this, Unger will be tough to beat.

On 3, Unger hit the ball left of the par three. LZ hit the green, but Shaw edged him for the greenie. Hamm was just short of the green. Shaw and Lazarchick missed the birdies and took par. Hamm and Unger made bogey.

Lazarchick did not get his driver around on 4 and feared he may have made the road. Shaw blasted a beauty down the middle. Hamm topped the ball and Mike Unger sliced one right over the trees, over the street, into someone’s front yard. LZ was safe and sent a decent shot out of the trees. Shaw won the hole with a Bogey. Hamm and LZ took a double. Unger got his first snowman.

The wind was again strong in their face on the 5th. It took LZ 3 shots to get close to the green. He chipped well and made bogey. Hamm took a 6, Scotty and Mike struggled to seven.

On 6, Lazarchick hit a strong drive too close to the trees on the left dropping the ball straight down very short.  Glenn Hamm exploded a drive with a sweet draw down the center of the fair way. Shaw hit the ball down the left side of the fairway into a trap. Lazarchick limped home to double. Shaw and Unger took 6. Glenn was just short in two, chipped up nicely and dropped the Birdie on the par 5.

Hamm lead of with a mighty blast on 7. Unger drove the ball left. Shaw was not quite as left, but long enough to make yet another bunker. He had lost strokes early from the sand, but now was becoming deadly. He would take a wood, long out of this trap in play. Lazarchick was down the middle but way short of Hamm’s blast. Shaw and Unger and Lazarchick were all on the green in four looking at long downhill putts. Hamm was pin high in the rough in 3. Both Unger and Shaw flew by the hole with their putts. Lazarchick watching their lines dropped 5 with a sweet curving 20 footer. Hamm was short out of the rough and settled for 5. It was a big save for LZ , draining a little dazzle out of Hamm’s growing energy.

On 8, Hamm cut the center of the fairway long with a draw. Shaw commented that Glenn was now on his game. LZ nodded in agreement. Hamm’s Beer took a quick spike on the stock market! Glenn would hit the green and two putt for an easy par. Unger was respectable with a bogey. Shaw played another sand trap and saved a six. Lazarchick missed another short putt and took 6.

On the way to nine Scotty told LZ that the match had tightened up significantly. Glenn drove the ball right of the par 3, 9th. Unger came up short into the pond. Lazarchick hit a high one down the right side of the green and a slight fade and heavy wind took it into the rough. Scotty hit into the rough just off the left side of the green closest to the pin, but not on. Glenn’s chip hit the green but rolled well past the hole giving LZ a read of the contour and distance. He chipped in a sweet Nasty Birdie. It was huge!!! Scotty dropped three strokes when his chip flew by the hole and he could only save 5. Glenn lost 2 with a bogey. Mike dropped 3 with a devastating 6. After nine, LZ was at 44. Glenn was at 45. Scotty had 50 and Mike Unger was still in a small lead counting handicap with a 52.

On 10, LZ used 2 wood. It was time to be in play, if not so long. He reflected on Glenn Hamm’s words about success. Play your game and wait for the others to blow up. Both Hamm and Shaw flew over LZ’s drive by a good 25 yards. LZ sent a beauty onto the green pin high left. Hamm chunked his shot short. Scotty was in another bunker, but this time sent a beauty into the left rough just off the green, pin high. Hamm played the hole straight, but short, short and finally in for 6. Mike played the course down the right side finally into a bunker and also took a six. Scotty chipped a beauty and dropped par. LZ missed another makeable putt and settled for 5. Scotty did not look like he was going to blow up. Hamm looked as if his energy had been drained.

Scotty’s drive on 11 was absolutely beautiful and very long. LZ used driver and was sorry as it sliced right, into the trees. Hamm was even farther right into the heavy brush and would need to drop. Art Czachorowski showed up with a cold and a sore shoulder. He asked who was winning and now it was LZ. Art would follow the foursome for several holes. The old guard at the tavern let everyone else know these challengers were lucky Art was not in the finals! Mike struggled all the way to a snowman , as did Hamm. Scotty was almost perfect, lipping out a Birdie and taking the easy par. LZ would give him another 2 strokes, dropping 6.

Scotty’s drive on the tough par 4 was perfect, a nice draw, long and within the 150 pole. LZ used 2 wood and landed safe just short of the 150 pole but resting in a divot, partially filled with sand. Both Hamm and Unger faded right into the tree line. With wind in his face LZ decided to play his 22 degree hybrid. He was 163 yards from the green with water on the left and a long bunker on the right. He would need a strong perfect shot to make the green. He was not willing to go up to his fairway wood and risk a chunk or giant fade. A near perfect swing straight, landed the ball just on the front edge. Scotty was focused making a charge, now just 2 strokes down, in position to stick the green. Not enough club and a slight slice, left him in the front bunker. His sand shot went up the hill, a costly error. He took a 5 while LZ two putted for a par. Both Hamm and Unger took 6 and were clearly out of the race. Art smiled at LZ with a “this could be your year grimace.”

The card said the pin was in the front playing 133 yards. At the hole they would see it was in the back a lot closer to 150. LZ came up short in front of the left bunker. Shaw went into the bunker. Hamm would take the greenie just getting on 13. Unger would struggle all the way to 6 strokes. Hamm 3 putted. Scotty got out and also made a 4 with a beautiful putt. LZ was now clearly focused. He took his sand wedge over the bunker to six feet and dropped a perfect center cup par. There was a slight fist pump as he gained back another stroke. Only the faithful at the Tavern noticed.

LZ used driver on 14, one of few holes with favorable back wind, pulling the ball too close to a small tree. Unger and Shaw found the fairway, Shaw with a monstrous drive. Hamm was off to the right. LZ with an awkward stance could not get the chip past the heavy rough and took a third shot that caught the club advancing the ball only to 135 out, still just off the fairway, and not as far as Scotty’s drive. He took a deep breath. He needed to avoid disaster. He had lost too many championships with late blow-ups. The swing with 7 iron was smooth. He played a slight fade to hit the hill on right side of the green, knowing the tendency of roll right to the pin. It was beautiful, just 6 feet long, leaving a downhill putt, providing a chance for Bogey. Shaw hit a beauty which fell short of the green. He couldn’t believe it. He thought he hit a perfect shot. He chipped long and two putted for 5. LZ could not drop the saving putt and gave back a stroke. Shaw knew he missed an opportunity. LZ was pleased. It could have been a lot worse!

With a par on 14, Mike Unger lead off on 15 and drove a long one into the bunker in the right center of the par 5 fairway. Scotty Shaw blasted his drive over that same bunker. Hamm missed the drive short left, clearly no longer focused. LZ tried driver again and this time sent a perfect shot just past the bunker into the middle of the fairway. His subsequent fairway wood attempt was behind the ball, opened the face, delivering a slice heading out of bounds. Better to be lucky than good sometimes, the ball hit a ridge on the far side of the cart path and bounced back in play. Scotty told him he was very lucky and commented again about his own overabundance of unlucky shots. Both he and Scotty would finish with bogeys. LZ was 3 up with 3 to play.

Into the wind to a pin 109 yards away, LZ used an 8 iron to fall on the left side of the green pin high. He would get the greenie. Scotty drove straight for the pin but it died and he just got on the front edge. Unger was left of the green and Hamm topped the ball into the waste sand. Shaw’s putt just moved right at the end and he tapped in par. LZ watched his putt go long and turn right well past the hole. He dropped a stroke taking a 4. 2 up with 2 to play. They were on the edge of their seats at the Polish American Tavern. It was an all Polish finish, one, two! The young studs boasted that “Doctor 2nd Place” would blow another one. But the loyal older crowd quietly toasted to a new year of destiny.

Shaw blasted his drive long, but it faded into the tree line. LZ retired the driver. He sent his trusted two wood straight down the middle. He slightly topped his fairway wood losing distance but staying down the middle. Scotty planned to hit out on the fairway and slice the ball towards the hole. Too far right, he sent the ball through a group of tree missing them all, “Wow was I lucky!” He and LZ were almost equal distances from the green. LZ made the green in 3. Scotty hit the green, but the ball bounced off the back into the rough. Scotty’s chip flew by the hole and left a long putt. LZ took a deep breath and lagged close to the hole and would deliver a center cup 4 footer. Scotty lipped out 5 and tapped in six. 3 up with 1 to go. The hole was the best for Mike Unger. A monster drive followed by a second shot into the bunker gave an opportunity for skillful play. Up and down, Mike took a Sandy. As they exited the green he lamented it was too little too late.

There would be no disaster on this day. LZ comfortably sent his 2 wood drive down the right side of the fairway with a few overhanding branches blocking a straight shot to the pin. Scotty sliced over the trees into the next fairway. LZ used a three iron to fade around the trees, into the center of the fairway. Not the time for caution, Scotty ignored the trees and sent a beauty through them all to within 100 yards of the green. He hit the green in three about 15 feet from the cup. LZ was cautious, chipping onto the green, leaving a long uphill putt. Not enough power, the subsequent putt stopped well short and turned off left. Scotty said he wanted to apply at least some pressure. His putt was a beauty but hit the cup with just a tad too much speed and lipped out. Too much sand for Scotty and too many lip outs. It was over. He casually missed the return and putted in 6. LZ gently two putted for a 3 stroke win. Dr. Michael C. Lazarchick had beaten the best the league had to offer. Finally, he was League Champion!

The Hanko Memorial drew the smallest field in OCAGA History. Marc Bohan, Glen Chabotar and David Hunt easily defeated Phil Stocker and Tommy Hunt. David Hunt had an awesome day driving the ball long. Glen delivered two of the par threes. The winners made two bogeys and a birdie on 18 for a 71. Stocker and Hunt dropped three Birdies, but shorter drives opened the door to bogies and a final 78.

Myrtle Beach Trip arranged by John Buechner

The group met in Atlantic City Airport. Well actually everyone else was onboard when Andy Swanson and Rich Antczak arrived at the terminal. In Myrtle beach we stopped for our traditional breakfast at the Cracker Barrel. We were surprised at Litchfield check-in with a $100 cash card each, good at all the golf courses and a $250.00 dinner for us all at Webster’s.

We checked into Avain Forest    Featured image That afternoon our first match was at River Club. It was a beautiful day and the course was in wonderful shape. Charlie Ranucci was on fire playing the back nine first, delivering a sweet 37 with a Sandy and a birdie. Rich Antczak captured the first greenie on 14 while Charlie took 17. Lazarchick (LZ) made a sandy on 18. After nine holes Lazarchick and OB were tied for second with 45 on the cards.

The front nine proved a challenge for everybody. Charlie birdied 6, struggling home with a 49, good enough for low gross 86 and low net on the day. Lazarchick took the greenie on 2 and dropped a beauty from off the green on 6 for a nasty. Andy Swanson took the greenie on 8. Bob had a nasty. Greenies paid $10 Each player threw 5 bucks in the Greenie pool. Charlie collected $2 for each player for the low net. Each player paid $1 for Nasties (in the hole from off the green), Sandies (up and down out of the sand)or Birdies.

Charlie $45 , LZ $24, Bob $17, Andy $10, Rich $10

Myrtle Beach National was the venue for day 2.

Kings North played tough, however the course was in superior condition and the putting was fast. Everyone predicted Lazarchick and Ranucci would deliver the low gross scores and become Captains to pick scramble teams. Not on this day. Both LZ and Charlie took an 8 on the last hole giving Andy Swanson the low gross score of 94.

When asked about the low score, Swanson said the hole looked huge!    Featured image

Rich Antczak shot 97 which took low net and he became the other Captain. Bob Daino, LZ, and Rich shared the greenies which paid $ 13 each. Bob got the extra buck because he met Phil in 6th grade and Phil ran the greenie pool. Charlie had a birdie on 15 and OB had a nasty on 2.

Meanwhile 8 players delivered 59 strokes playing the par 5, #6 hole, The Gambler.

Rich $27, Bob $14, LZ 13, Charlie $7, OB $7

The first Scramble was played on the back nice of South Creek. Team Swanson , Andy, LZ, Phil Stocker and Chris Garand won the scramble, collecting $50 each. LZ dropped a 15 footer on 11 for a Birdie. Andy Swanson made it 2 under with another long one at 12. At 14, Chris dropped a beauty for -3. Just when the wheels were turning, they came off. Everyone missed the par putt at 15. On 16, Phil Stocker asked to be lead putter. He promptly dropped a long Birdie to move the team back to 3 under and made it -4 on the next hole. They dropped par on 18. Team Antczak, Rich, Charlie, OB and Bob just couldn’t drop the long Birdies. They Birdied 14 and 18 for 2 under, collecting $25 each.

Pawleys Plantation with the fastest greens and the challenging 69 yard par three was Day 3. The weather was even warmer. Pawleys proved to be a significant challenge for all and not just because we had company on the course.

Playing the back first, LZ birdied 16 and posted the low gross 43. However playing 5, 6 and 7, 10 over pushed him to a final score of 95. Charlie took low gross with a 92. The big winner was Andy Swanson with a birdie on 3 followed by a nasty, birdie on 5, finishing with a gross 94 and the low net. Phil Stocker chipped in a nasty from the drop zone on 14. Andy, OB, Charlie and Bob each collected $10 for greenies.

Andy $45, OB $10, Charlie $10, Bob $10, Phil $ 7.

Total strokes= 784

Deciding the Scramble winners must be under par and would win it all if their opponents were not, proved too difficult. Captain Bob with Charlie, Chris and Phil finished even after starting birdie, birdie. Captain OB with LZ, Andy and Rich finished plus 1, taking a bogy on 8 and all pars otherwise. No winners!

Prime Rib Smorgasbord at Webster’s on Them!   Muscles were superb!

The battle moved to Willbrook Plantation on day 4.

With the coffers full, the stakes went up. Greenies were now $20 for closest and $10 for the next closest. Birdies, Nasties and Sandies each paid $10. LZ played the front lights out delivering a sweet 39. The greens did not roll with any consistency and he missed Birdie putts on nearly every hole. He did capture closest to the pin on 4, with Charlie 2nd and on 6, with Rich 2nd. The best game however, came from Bob Daino. He use 41 strokes on the front after starting with a Birdie. He game was smooth and methodical. He took both 1st and 2nd closest to the pin on the difficult 12th hole. With a Birdie on 18, he caught LZ and they shared a low gross 86. Bob easily he took low net for $20. Charlie made a Sandy on 12. Andy had a very long Birdie on 6. In the other foursome, OB started with a Bird and Chris found the hole on 11. Rich took closest to the pin on 17. Andy was 2nd. Rich was keeping score in one cart and needed remedial education from Phil to get the numbers added right. In his defense he disclosed that he had to attend summer school for math!

Bob $70, LZ $40, Andy $20, Rich $20, Charlie $20, OB $10

Total Strokes = 753

There was no scramble promising a huge payoff for the last day.   Lunch at Pastaria 811 & Take out Chinese for Dinner.

OB was closest to the pin on #2 ($20) with Charlie second ($10). No one hit # 7. Andy Swanson took a double Greenie all by himself on # 12 ($60). Phil took #17 ($20) and Charlie was second ($10).

ROB JULIANO STUPENDOUS AT SAND BARRENS *************** Lazarchick takes regular season points!

It was a cool morning with gusts of wind. The smallest field in OCAGA tournament history (7) played Sand Barrens on the closing day of the 2014 Regular Season. Glen Chabotar needed a bigger field to make the final four. Before the math was done he was told he might not have enough point even with a win. Indeed, with a win and closest to the pin, he would fall a point short if Mike Unger came in last!

Watching the battle, the Godfather sipped Amaro Fernet Branca.  He held his glass high, “This one is for Rob!” Next year he thought. The young stud Rob Juliano would be a force that would bring glory back to the Italian Bistro. The early lead low gross was held by Lazarchick with a 43 on the north course. Hamm posted a 44 on the Scorecard and Rob came in at 47. Scotty Shaw took the three points for closest to the pin on #9 and signed relief knowing he was now in the championship. The subsequent birdie gave him a 46 on the front. Glen Chabotar holding the high handicap was respectable with a 52. Marc Bohan was way off his game struggling for a 54 and Mike Unger was looking at high score with a 59.

Out of the gate on the west course, Rob Juliano dropped a sweet putt for Birdie. The Godfather told Bruno to by a round for the patrons. He could feel the energy. On the tough #5 hold, Rob dropped a beauty for par. Hamm took a 7 and Lazarchick faltered to a snowman. The subsequent par on #6 with Hamm and Lazarchick each taking a double, was sealing a clutch finish! Lazarchick picked up 4 strokes on the final three holes. Hamm took back 3. Not enough! Rob Juliano beat the final four contenders and to the Godfather, it was a forecast of  a brilliant future.

Juliano net 74, Hamm net 75, Lazarchick net 76, Chabotar net 76, Shaw net 82, Unger net 85, Bohan net 94 (not a typo!)

  • Regular Season Points

  • 137         Hamm, Glenn

Final Four:   LAZARCHICK , HAMM , SHAW AND UNGER will play for the Championship.

Lazarchick took the point total. Can he beat the 2nd place jinx?  Hamm is the reigning two time Champ. Shaw had the lowest score in a tournament this year. Unger is getting a lot of strokes. You call it!

The Hanko Memorial will pair the highest handicap with lowest. The format will be 6 holes best ball, 6 holes alternate shot and finish with a six hole scramble.

IT WAS ALL ABOUT LAG PUTTS OR Richie, Richie, He’s toooo Cute!

The Polish American Tavern was filled with bombastic exuberance and slight undercurrents of lamentation. When Art Czachorowski withdrew from the tournament after only six holes, the old guard was despondent. They had hoped for yet another late season jaunt into the final four. Czak ‘s shoulder gave out probably from hoisting too many pints in England. However, Mike Lazarchick solidified his 1st place position and Richie Antczak grabbed a victory at Mays Landing. Needless to say, the Polish Princesses Girl Scout Troop was in full attire, marching up and down the boulevard, behind their leader who was perorating the virtues of their heartthrob. Intermittent squeals of “Richie, Richie, He’s toooo Cute!” irritated the Godfather at the nearby Italian Bistro!

Rich found par on 1, 4, 10, 12 and 14 and delivered a net 66 on a day with greens too similar to shag carpet. Player after player could not get the ball to the hole, even downhill. The green were excessively inconsistent with only two players able to break 90. Richie played right with his foursome, easily taking down OB, Chabotar and Shaw. Placing a sweet 48 on the Scorecard after 9, Rich put significant pressure on the low handicappers. Bohan’s 42,  Ranucci’s 43,  Lazarchick’s 44  & Glenn Hamm’s 45 were not in contention. The real tournament battle was clearly from David Hamm (44), Mike Unger (46) and Tommy Hunt (47). Through the first 5 holes on the back, Richie expanded his lead over his close competitors. When the wheels finally came off on the last 3 holes, even playing 9 over par, Rich would still take the win by 3 strokes. David Hamm finished 2nd also surviving a weak finish. Mike Unger and Tommy Hunt finished 3rd and 4th , not able to finish strong enough. Mike Lazarchick made a gallant charge, finally finding the putting distance on the back and took 5th place with the low gross score on the day (86).

FINAL FOUR:   With one to go, the final four is all but set in stone. As long as Lazarchick shows he is in the final four. Mike Unger finally stopped the skid and retook 2nd place overall. Glenn Hamm and Scotty Shaw, with less than their best, held on to favorable positions. Shaw took the needed 3 Points for Closest to the Pin on the only green anyone hit! A review of past history revealed it was the right green to hit. Family obligations have ended Tommy Hunt’s regular season. He got to the doorstep looking in, but turns away. Glen Chabotar and Charlie Ranucci are not mathematically eliminated, but both have a lot of ground to cover and need someone up top to basically finish close to last! If the field is too small, there just are not many points available to make up ground.

Points:

  • 123         Lazarchick     Has made Final Four
  • 117         Unger              Probably In
  • 114         Hamm, G       Probably in
  • 113         Shaw               Probably in
  • 111          Hunt               Not Playing Sand Barrens
  • 103        Chabotar        Must win & someone up top finished near last
  • 99           Ranucci         Must win & someone up top finishes near last
  • 92           Hamm, D      Mathematically eliminated unless Wins with Closest to the Pin Mathematically Eliminated Below
  • 91           Czachorowski
  • 86           Swanson

  • 59           Juliano
  • 58           Stocker

SHAW STUPENDOUS AT GREENTREE

The Polish American Tavern was utter mayhem. They ran out of Zywiec before midnight,  but by 2 AM the sales rep had arrived with a new load featuring a promo with Super Scotty Shaw and the Polish Super Princess.

Lazarchick maintained his first place position in the League. Scotty Shaw however, vaulted up to 3rd place and Art Czachorowski put himself in striking distance with Two to Go. Scotty and Art both placed 42 on the front scorecard, one behind Rob Juliano. Art was respectable with a 44 on the back. Juliano used only 40 strokes. But Scotty played Greentree like a Pitch and Putt, finishing the back with a sizzling 36!

The battle was from Glen Chabotar back on the tour from extended rehab, and Rookie Rob Juliano. Glen came out on fire, starting Birdie, Par. He finished the front leading Shaw by 11 Strokes and Juliano by 8. Juliano started with 3 for Par and would collect a total of 10 on the day, plus a Birdie. Scotty found par 8 times and dropped 3 for Birdie. Scotty scored 4 on 7 straight holes on the back. Glen dropped 3 for par over those holes and went into seventeen, leading by 4 Strokes. Rob opened the back with 3 pars but in the next four holes, playing 6 over par, fell a stroke behind Scotty after 15. Glen took a disappointing 6 on seventeen and saved a Bogy 6 on 18. Rob found par on seventeen and delivered a sweet Birdie on eighteen. Scotty Shaw was intently focused. A beautiful drive right down the middle on 17, followed by a short iron to the green opened the door. The Birdie Putt was beautiful. He was two up on Juliano and cut Chabotar’s lead to 1. The drive and second shot down the 18th were ideal. The drama in the air caught the attention of other golfers on the course. He had a gallery when he delivered a beautiful approach shot to the green. The long putt was close and the short putt grabbed the victory! Shaw was elated. It was his best tournament of the season!

With 2 to go, the race to the final four has tightened up. Tommy Hunt ( finished 4th) and Glen Chabotar (finished 2nd) continue to play well and use their high handicaps to advantage. Lazarchick (finished 7th) and Hamm (finished 6th) held on to their one, two positions, but Scotty Shaw with the victory has vaulted up with them. Mike Unger just needs to recapture his early season form, still very much in the hunt, sliding back just a little more (finished 8th ) Art Czachorowski (finished 5th) is now in striking distance and is famous for his late season charges. Charlie Ranucci (finished 12th), was under the weather at Greentree, could still steal a spot. Andy Swanson (finished 10th), along with Charlie, needs to Win Mays Landing.

With 2 to Go

106 Lazarchick

104 G Hamm

102 Shaw

96 Unger

Historically the Top 3 with 2 to Go, usually make the final Four. Four players are within 12 points of 4th place and that is the battleground at Mays Landing.

92 Hunt

90 Chabotar

85 Czachorow

84 Ranucci

77 Swanson

69 D Hamm

68 Borillo

59 Juliano

56 Bohan

51 Stocker

29 O’Brien

27 Buechner

21 Antczak

SCATS

In the SCATMAN Race Glen Chabotar and Scotty Shaw won a boatload in Handicap. Scotty Shaw added more in the Scratch category.
